How to install Norton anti-virus - over the web - Macintosh

(For a Windows version of this file, Click here.)

Note: The following should be used only if you are connected over a fast link. The program is too big to download via a modem, ask Ravi for CD version in that case. This procedure can be used for Macintosh systems only! The installation will require a reboot at the end, so start by quitting all other programs.

  1. Use Internet Explorer (or other web browser) to connect to:

       http://www.neurophys.wisc.edu/ftp_arch/virus/mac/

enter the username and password required.

  2. Click on the Norton anti-virus program link on that page.
It contains Norton AntiVirus 9.0.1 for Mac OS X, and Norton AntiVirus 7.0.2 for Mac OS 8.1 - 9.x.

  3. The downloaded file should expand automatically. Double click the file called "NAV Mac.smi" (this file is known as a disk image).

  4. The disk image icon entitled "NAV Mac" should appear on your desktop, like a normal disk.

  5. Double click the "NAV Mac" disk image. Inside, double click the NAV installer appropriate for your operating system. If you are unsure about your operating system, select "About This Mac" or "About This Computer" from the Apple menu.

  6. Read and accept the License Agreement and Read Me files.

  7. Follow the steps in the installer. At the end of the installation, reboot your computer. By default, NAV will be installed in your Applications folder on Mac OS X, or at the top level of your Hard Disk on Mac OS 8 and 9.

  8. Post Install: Keep your virus definitions up to date by using Norton LiveUpdate, included with the installation. It is recommended that you run LiveUpdate once a month. NOTE: You're not likely to see new virus defs released everyday, but you should see new defs about once per week.
